Rick Calverley’s friends thought he was crazy when he purchased a 15-acre campground on the edge of Mansfield 10 years ago.

“It was a wreck,” Calverley said. “The city was about to close it down.”

But Calverley and his wife, Jacque, renamed the park Texan RV Ranch and immediately started making improvements.

Today, three quarters of a million dollars later, Texan RV Ranch has doubled in size to 134 sites. It also has six park model cabins, a bathhouse, recreation hall, a swimming pool, a playground and a 1,000-square-foot convenience store, which is as popular with Mansfield residents as it is with park guests.

“We do a heck of a propane business,” Calverley said. “We also sell beer here as well as fountain drinks and hot dogs. We also sell tacos, which we get from a local Mexican restaurant. And we do a breakfast in our ranch house.”

And while the economy has recently gone through a recession, business at Texan RV Ranch gets better each year. “We had our best year ever last year,” Calverley said.  “So far this year, business is up even further compared to last year.

“Most of the time, we’re pretty full,” Calverley said.

Texan RV Ranch has a diverse customer base that includes travelers as well as people coming into the Dallas-Fort Worth area for temporary work.

But it’s the location of the park that is perhaps its best attribute along with its cleanliness. “We’re only 15 miles from Cowboy Stadium,” Calverley said. “And we keep everything spotless. We get a lot of compliments about that. We also have a good Wi-Fi system.”

The park also has a new clubhouse with kitchen facilities as well as an exercise room.

Texan RV Ranch has also gotten the attention of the Texas Association of Campground Owners (TACO), which gave the park its “Website of the Year Award” last year.

TexanRVRanch.com is packed with information and photos as well as video tours. “The website is pretty usable for anyone who comes to the site,” Calverley said, adding that the park’s brochures and rack cards match the designs used on the website.

Texan RV Ranch is affiliated with the Texas Association of Campground Owners, which markets campgrounds through www.TexasCampgrounds.com and www.TexasCabinRentals.net as well as the RV Travel & Camping Guide to Texas, a free, four-color glossy magazine that lists more than 375 campgrounds and RV resorts in Texas and surrounding states  For more information about the directory or camping in Texas, please call Brian Schaeffer at (817) 307-0129.
